I was just finishing up my freshman year of college and a group of us were enjoying the end of school with a lunch at Denny’s. We’d been there an hour or so. The bill had been brought to us, but we were still chatting and eating. I decided to treat my friends (it was a small bill), so while they were chatting, I got up to go to the bathroom and surreptitiously grabbed the bill on my way.
The bathrooms are right across from the front desk where you pay your bill. As I was coming out of the bathroom, I noticed a couple who were just finishing up and were out the door before I made it to the desk. I didn’t get a good look at them and I didn’t think anything about it… then things got weird.
I handed my bill to the same server who had just checked out the couple ahead of me. He looked at me curiously and asked if there was anything wrong. “No,” I said, “just paying my bill.” He continued to look at me strangely and for a full minute looked from me back to the bill I’d handed him before he said, “I’m confused.”
For a minute, I thought the server was a complete idiot. He probably cashes people out a million times a day, I had no idea why suddenly this was so difficult for him. Finally I said, “Can I just pay my bill?” to which he replied… “I thought you just did!” I assured him I had not and was in the process of paying when my friend came up and grabbed me by the elbow, led me back to the table, and told me to sit down.
She explained that after I’d gone to the bathroom they had noticed that the bill was missing and guessed my secret plan. She headed for the front desk intending to stop me. When she saw me paying the bill, she made a move to grab me by the shoulders when she stopped dead in her tracks. Something about me seemed “wrong.” She said I looked the same, but then she noticed that I seemed to be with a strange man she didn’t know, and it certainly wasn’t anyone we came in with.
She went back to the table and watched “me” leave only to see me appear, mere seconds later, out of the bathroom. I would have thought it was a prank if the waiters attitude hadn’t backed up her story. His confusion became clear to me, he had just seen me pay my bill only to return seconds later to pay it again. I’ve never heard of two witnesses to a doppelganger. One friend and one stranger seeing and recognizing the incident makes it just doubly weird.
