The Cross My Mother Haunted

23 November 2016 | Your Stories, Your True Encounters

My mother died suddenly when I was a teenager and as a way of keeping her memory alive my father thought it would be a good idea for me to wear her cross.  He told me that he would come to my dorm at college that weekend and bring it with him. When he arrived, he went to get the envelope out of his jacket pocket, he couldn’t find it. More than a little bit worried, he went and searched the entire car to see if it might have fallen out. Not finding it there, he went back home and tried to find it—but had no luck. Finally giving up, he went went about the events of the day feeling very bad for having lost the cross he promised me.

The very next day my father drove my brother back to the college and after parking they both went to get out of the car to say goodbye before my brother had to attend a class. When my father opened the door, and looked down at the ground, there was the cross lying between his feet.

Now it was the middle of the day at a busy college and in the middle of the parking lot. Just the cross lying on the cold, hard concrete. To this very day, we have no idea how it got there. Was this a sign from my mother?
