I had a few experiences with the paranormal in my life. I’ve had a few run in’s with ghosts. Those are stories for another time. Today, I want to share my story of a near death experience when I was a kid. For a long time I never shared with anyone out of fear of not being believed. I am past that now and here goes my story.
One summer day, the end of my third grade year, my best friend invited me to come along to go down to the neighborhood creek. We lived in a small town in Wisconsin and the creek was a wooded area behind a park down the street from our house. My friend Crystal along with her uncle, step dad and I walked through the small wooded area to the creek. We decided to just get in the water and walk it to see where it would lead us. Not a smart idea for two girls who couldn’t swim but hey we trusted the adults. As we walked talked and played we noticed the water had gotten deeper. The water was waist deep on my friend and I so the guys came up with the idea to put us on their shoulders. Crystal’s uncle put me on his shoulders and Crystal step dad had her on his shoulders. As soon as they had us comfortably on shoulders and taken their first step we all went down. There was a drop off underneath the water!
I panicked! Trying to swim up to the surface for air but couldn’t quite get there. Someone from below pushed me up but yet again I couldn’t reach the surface. All I kept thinking about was my Mom how she would never find me because I was going to die. How hurt she would be. I prayed and asked God not to let me die. I kept saying this in my mind. Then at my last breath I thought to myself there is no God. Right then I saw a white light, a tunnel. A man’s voice spoke and called me by name. I walked this beautiful tunnel of light following the voice. I saw a beautiful, curly hair little girl dressed in all white smiling at me. As I continued to walk I felt peace and I didn’t want to leave. I don’t have any memory of what happened during that time. All I remember hearing the man’s voice tell me I have to go back and the words “when I call, come”.
No one knows how this happened. On the way home we all were silent until Crystal’s uncle asked what happened. Crystal and her dad were on the other side of the creek from where her uncle and I were. The uncle told us when he tried to push me up he notice I wasn’t moving. In fact he thought I had drowned because I looked frozen stiff in the water. The men tried saving us. The miracle happened when we all came forth from the water, my friend Crystal was on her step dad’s shoulders, I was on Crystal’s uncle shoulders coming up onto the shore in shallow water. No one could figure out what happened. I never told my story with them that day and now I wish I had. They very well may have believed me.
