I have a true story that scares me to this day.
It all started on my school camp in Borneo around middle school we were only staying for the week and a company ran our activities, it was mainly construction on a school playground for the native school children, and after a day of hard work we all headed back to the site, where we all stayed in bamboo huts six of us in each room. Me and my friends were all heading to bed and mosquito proofing our beds. I was the last one awake and locked our door so no other students came in to make pranks or whatever they thought was funny. It was a basic bamboo lock and all teachers and camp leaders knew how to open them.
Later around 11:40, I was drifting off when I thought I heard a man screaming and dogs bark but I thought I was imagining things. I later fell asleep and awoke around 3:00 in the morning because from what I could tell someone was trying to break into our room. They clearly didn’t know about our trusty lock, but less than a minute later they got in …. I pretended to be asleep as I saw a strange man – tall, bald and wearing baggy clothes. It wasn’t that of our teacher’s or camp people. e walked past the first to bed with the door wide open and stopped at my friends bed, started staring at her and shifted on his feet. I was terrified he was less than a meter from her bed. I was praying he wouldn’t notice me but I was scared for my friend conflicted when a girl near the back of the room sneezed in her sleep and he left …. the next day I forgot all about it only remembering when I saw our door wide. open I asked my friends if they opened it but they were only just waking up. Many of the other students thought they saw someone while hiking or sneaking out to buy soft drinks, the camp people brushed us off and teachers thought we were playing games.
I still get terrified leaving my door open at night, knowing that not even locks can protect me from the things that go bump in the night.
