Harold and the Cat

19 November 2020 | Haunted houses, Your Stories, Your True Encounters

As long as I can remember I have had an interest in the paranormal and supernatural and have had many experiences through my life. The house I lived in as a child in Bristol, England harboured both friendly and not so friendly entities and it is the experiences with both of these I want to share with you.

I cannot remember when the strange occurrences started but I think it may have had something to do with the use of a ouija board in the house. It was used at Christmas when my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins were all in the house. I was not present in the room where the board was used but saw it laid out before the session began. I don’t know what happened but do know that a message was received which had meaning for one of my uncles. It freaked everyone out and I don’t think the ouija board was used again.

Something about the feel of the house changed after that. Items would be moved from where we knew we had left them and be found somewhere else- sometimes this would be some time later. When my dad was out of the house, we would hear the sound of keys in the lock and the door opening. No one would be there but 10 minutes later my dad would come home. My sister played the piano and a male voice would often be heard singing while she played . Harold as he came to be known, was the friendly entity. He was seen by my sisters friend one evening standing in the front room. She commented the next day that she had seen my dad when she walked by but we knew that at the time she saw him he wasn’t in the house. She described a man wearing a dark pinstripe suit. I saw the same man sometime later when I returned home late after everyone was in bed and the lights were out. I climbed the stairs and he was sitting in a chair on the landing at the top of the stairs. Surprisingly I didn’t feel afraid.

There have been a few instances where I have been very afraid though. The one which stands out in my mind was at night. I heard what sounded like a cat move across the floor of the bedroom then jump on the bed. I had a cat at the time but he was always shut downstairs at night. The “cat” walked up the bed and stopped in front of my face. Thinking that somehow my cat had got upstairs, I opened my eyes. What I saw was the most evil looking cat you could imagine. A black cat with a snarl on its face, teeth barred and piercing eyes. You may think I was dreaming but after closing my eyes tightly and wishing for it to go away I felt it move down the bed and onto the floor. I shared a room with my sister at the time and after a short time my sister said there’s a cat on my bed. I told her what I had experienced so she kept her eyes shut and we both just lay there hoping it would go away.

I have had many more experiencing in my life and a lot happened in that house. I’ll save the rest for another time.
