A group of ghost hunters have captured a ghostly figure as they took a selfie at Berry Pomeroy Castle.

Wayne from Ivybridge, along with friends John and Shaun visited the historic castle near Totnes around eight weeks ago.

The trio decided to take a selfie on what was their first ghostly outing as a group at around 12.30pm at the side of the castle.

Wayne said: “As we we’re leaving, John took a selfie of us and there was nothing on the photo when we first took it.

“It’s 100% legit, I know lots of people will suggest that its vape smoke or whatever but nobody was vaping or smoking.

“If you look properly it’s like a mist, but it’s green in colour.

“We we’re running a K2 session at the time which picks up paranormal activity and the lights on the machine were going berserk.”

The castle is reported to be one of the most haunted buildings in the UK.

The castle is reported to be one of the most haunted buildings in the UK.

“We do our homework before we go out, and we researched what spirits are supposed to be at the castle.”

The image was taken around the side of the castle which contains a large amount of history.

Legend has it has that Lady Margaret Pomeroy was imprisoned by her older sister, Lady Eleanor for being prettier. She spent many years in the filthy dungeons below the castle before she supposedly starved to death.

It is also believed that the daughter of the Pomeroy family is said to have killed her baby after being forced into a relationship with her father, this is thought to date back to the 18 century.

Shortly after the baby’s birth, it is believed that she killed the baby – many visitors have claimed that she now wonders the castle at night and have heard cries for help.

Many have claimed seeing a blue light on a particular day every year in St. Margaret’s tower, usually during the evening.

Wayne contacted The Herald with his image after reading of a group of teenagers who believe they captured the figure of a horse and its rider upon a late night visit to the castle.

Chloe, 19 and her friends captured the image after being intrigued by the general scare factor of the castle.

The group hadn’t intended to find any ghosts or paranormal things as they walked around the front of the castle.

Chloe previously said: “Never in a million years did I think I’d get a photo like this one.

“I took the image just in front of the café shack thing they have there.

“It’s actually a beautiful castle but just freaky at night.”

Before the castle was sold to the Seymour family, it came under siege.

Legend has it that two of the Pomeroy brothers took their own lives as they were chased by enemies, rather than fall into their hands.

The young brothers, dressed in full armour, are thought to have rode their horses up to the top of the castle ramparts and together leapt to their deaths.

Many visitors claim they have heard screams and noises in the area of the castle known as, Pomeroy’s Leap.

Chloe said to others wishing to find paranormal activity at the castle: “Be in a group and definitely avoid going alone as people have said they’ve come out with scratches or brusies leaving the castle.”

Helen Lonsborough, Site Manager of Berry Pomeroy Castle said: “Berry Pomeroy Castle is a scheduled ancient monument in the care of English Heritage, and is open daily from 10am – 6pm.

“We would ask that people do not attempt to visit the castle outside of these hours when the site is closed.”
