My husband had dementia for years. We cared for him at home as long as we could before placing him in care. He could still walk, but had to be watched constantly.
The second night he was there, he was sitting in his recliner watching tv. I went in the bathroom, and found wet towels on the floor beneath the sink. I bent to pick them up…bent from the waist and not in a graceful stoop. I felt 5 or 6 pats on my rear. Thinking my husband had followed me into the bath room, I straightened and quickly turned. He was still sitting in his chair, and I was alone. I said, “Please don’t touch! It’s not nice.” (As a nurse, I’ve worked in numerous hospitals, and almost all of them had a room or hallway with a story.)
Two nights later, I was sitting with my husband until he went to sleep. His room was in darkness, with the only light coming from a nightlight in the bathroom. His bed was against the wall, I was sitting in the recliner beside him, and the door to the hallway was closed. The overhead light switch was on the wall by the door. Suddenly, the light came on. I went to turn it off, saying, “He really needs his sleep. Please don’t turn the light on.”
There was nothing threatening about this entity, and I never felt frightened.
Nothing else occurred during the two months we were there.
I never spoke of those events to any of the staff or other visitors.
