The strangest thing that happened to me was when I was growing up in Tennessee. My mother was ill and out of work and we lived in a very old house near Knoxville. We all slept in the same bedroom, my mother, my younger sister, and I. This arrangement was done in order to close off the other rooms for better heating.
My story takes place late one night. We had gone to bed early and I had been sleeping soundly until I suddenly woke up for no reason, and had a feeling that someone was watching me. I turned over to look toward my mother, who was asleep in the bed with my younger sister. I then noticed something that really terrified me. Sitting in an old chair, between the two beds, was an elderly-looking gentleman. He looked real with graying hair and was wearing a white long-sleeve shirt with dark slacks. He was just sitting there staring right at me.
I forced myself to turn away and tried to find a reason for what I had just seen. I couldn’t find one and couldn’t find enough courage to turn over and look again. I just closed my eyes and tried to go back to sleep.
I didn’t tell anyone about this sighting. A few years later I was at a family gathering for a meal. After our meal, we were making small talk when my younger sister brought up our childhood and the earlier years at that old house. To my surprise, she mentioned that the only thing that really bothered her was the old man who she had seen in our bedroom where our mother slept with us.
