It’s actually my mum’s story though she didn’t tell my sister and I until years later . When I was 12 and my sister was 15, we went to Whitby in north Yorkshire on holiday with mum and dad. This happened to me a couple of months ago when I was working away from home. My workplace had booked me into a guesthouse to stay for the week. When I arrived there, I saw that it was an older building and at the door there was a old copper plate mounted saying that the building had been an orphanage that had opened in 1827 and closed in 1988. I was ending another long day of construction work with a meal at a Golden Corral steak house in south Florida. As I exited the building, it was already dark and close to 9 pm. I was approached by a young man, clean, respectful, but who explained that he was down on his luck and living behind the restaurant in a tent, and could I give him some money. I said nothing and walked to my truck. My policy was to give nothing to panhandlers. I got in the truck and could plainly see the entire area but he was gone, vanished! I was just finishing up my freshman year of college and a group of us were enjoying the end of school with a lunch at Denny’s. We’d been there an hour or so. The bill had been brought to us, but we were still chatting and eating. I decided to treat my friends (it was a small bill), so while they were chatting, I got up to go to the bathroom and surreptitiously grabbed the bill on my way. The bathrooms are right across from the front desk where you pay your bill.
